Who are Applied Algae?

Applied Algae ("Applied Algae AB") is a Biotech and Greentech company based in Sweden. You can read more about bio and greentech here: https://appliedalgae.co/bio-and-green-tech

We are working on solutions to some of the biggest problems of today, carbon emissions, sustainable crops/foods, water scarcity and much more. We do all this with help from a tiny organism that has lived on our planet for more than two (2) billion years, algae. Namely microalgae or blue-green bacteria (also called cyanobacteria).

Microalgae was the reason for what is today called "the great oxygenation event". This changed the world forever, as algae started to produce oxygen in their photosyntesis. Oxygen was released into Earth's atmosphere as carbon dioxide got fixated in the algal biomass, this eventually made all other live possible.

Today we stand before huge environmental challenges on a global scale. We as humanity need to reduce our emissions of carbon dioxide (but also other green house gases "GHG"), but this is not enough. Recent scientific findings (https://www.ipcc.ch/report/carbon-dioxide-capture-and-storage/) shows that we have to remove a big part of the carbon dioxide that is already present in our atmosphere. There are quite a few reasons for this, but one of the most obvious ones is that not all sectors will be able to be carbon neutral by 2050 (for example, steel and cement).

Revolution

The carbon dioxide emissions is the most urgent long-term environmental threat humanity is facing. By utilizing carbon dioxide already present in the atmosphere to create refined products, we can make a real difference.

Frequently asked questions

Of course we should plant more trees! Trees are a cheap way to sequester carbon dioxide, preserve forests and reduce erosion of the soil. It also produces durable and sustainable biomass. However, there are a few things that will make tree planting problematic in the long run. For example, it takes quite some time for a tree to become fully grown (and thus fixate carbon dioxide). During this time there are threats such as wildfires that would return the carbon dioxide to the atmosphere again.

Do not just take our word for it, please conduct your own research in this matter. You can for example find more information here: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-019-00122-z

Climate offsetting is a way for companies and individuals to compensate for their emissions. These compensations are usually not done in the same location as the emission was done, but rather somewhere else usually somewhere else in the world. You can read more about it here on Britannica: https://www.britannica.com/technology/carbon-offset

No! Climate compensation (also known as climate offsetting) is just one of many tools that we as a society has to use in order to reverse climate change. There are lots of arguments in favor for climate compensation, there are for example companies/sectors that will be very difficult (or take very long time) to become completely emissions free. Two examples would be the steel and concrete sectors.
